Intellectual Property Rights

Thank you for visiting the Directorate of Intellectual Property Rights. Kenyatta University acknowledges that Intellectual Property (IP) management is an important asset in operation of University’s triad core business of teaching, research and community services. The Establishment of the Intellectual Property Rights Unit was aimed at spearheading issues of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). New knowledge can lead to innovative breakthrough and new technologies that form bases of new industrial ventures. Legal protection through IPR is a key step in the process of industrial development and commercialization. Literal and artistic works play a big role in knowledge creation. Intellectual Property Rights Unit therefore deals with Industrial properties, Copyrights and Plant Breeders’ Rights.

The Intellectual Property Rights was set up at Kenyatta University in 2007 to advise on and spearhead protection of different forms of Intellectual Property generated at the University, and facilitate their downstream development into new commercial ventures in close collaboration with local industry.

To spearhead the process of identification, protection and management of inventive research and creativity

To create awareness of Intellectual Property Rights, promote creativity and innovation, and facilitate the development of commercially promising discoveries for societal development.
