Background

The DAAD In-Country/In-Region Scholarships is an expansion of DAAD programs for Postgraduates in Eastern Africa. With this programme, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), DAAD seeks to strengthen and expand its regional network of high-quality academic partners offering development-related Master and/or PhD studies which are geared towards capacity building of teaching and research staff. DAAD has been supporting programs in Biotechnology, Renewable Energy, Environmental Planning and Management and Integrated Watershed Management. The scholarship targets postgraduate students from Universities, research institutes and research networks from member states of the East African Community as well as Ethiopia and South Sudan. Call for applications are always advertised on the DAAD website and at Kenyatta University with detailed instructions on the application process.

 MS-ROSE-CHEMUTAI

Ms. Rose Lagat

 

 Ms. Rose Lagat from Eldama Ravine, Kenya has special interest in Biotechnology as a tool for improving the livelihoods of resource poor farmers in Africa. She is currently undertaking a PhD in Biotechnology at the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology at Kenyatta University, a scholarship is funded by DAAD. An alumni of Kenyatta University at the undergraduate level, Rose has been attracted and motivated to study at Kenyatta University due to the availability of modern facilities, qualified staff and conducive environment for studies. Currently she is carrying out genetic transformation of farmer preferred lowland and upland rice varieties to confer drought tolerance.

Rose hopes to provide rice farmers with improved rice cultivars and eventually contributing to food security in Kenya. She is currently under the supervision of Dr. Mathew Piero Ngugi and Dr. Steven Runo both of Kenyatta University and is scheduled to graduate in July 2020. Ms Rose’s slogan is “ Humility and the fear of the Lord brings wealth, honour and life. Proverbs 22:4”y.

 

 MS-HANNAH

Ms. Hannah Kinuthia

 

Ms. Hannah Kinuthia from Kiambu County is a young lady with special interest in exploring matters on land in Kenya specifically the impact of fragmentation of suburb land in Nairobi Metropolitan and is currently undertaking a PhD in Environmental Planning and Management at Kenyatta University. The scholarship is funded by DAAD. An alumni of the University of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology at the undergraduate level, Hannah was attracted to KU due to their advancement in training especially in Environmental Studies which her area of interest. They have facilities that are well equipped hence creating a conducive environment for learning.

She is currently working on a research proposal on the impact of suburban land speculation and urban sprawl on urban development in Nairobi Metropolitan. Her future apsiration is sensitization of stakeholders in planning the upcoming urban areas in a better way to ensure the mutliplied effect of urban sprawl in our current Urban areas is reduced. As part of this ambition Hannah has participated in developing a concept model city (Kutus Unicity) through Kirinyaga University for Kutus Town in Kirinyaga County. Hannah is Scheduled to graduate in December 2020

Mr. Andrew Ogolla

   Mr. Andrew Ogolla, a tenaciously hardworking gentleman from Western Kenyan is undertaking a Master of Science degree in Bitechnology in the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechology funded by DAAD. Andrew is in the second year and is scheduled to graduate in 2018. Andrew has special interests in plant tolerance to environmental stresses and is currently investigating maize pollen development under heat stress with specific interest at the molecular level. The core of his research will be carried out at the University of Regensburg, Germany under the mentorship of Dr. Kevin Begcy and Drs Steve Runo and Richard Oduor both of Kenyatta University. Andrew is an alumni of Kenyatta University.

Ms Shukran Dario

 

 Ms Shukran Dario, a cheerful lady from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania is undertaking a Masters degree in Integrated Watershed Management, a Center of Excellence in the Department of Geography at Kenyatta University funded by DAAD. An alumni of the University of Dar es Salam, Dario was motivated to study at Kenyatta University by the good facilities available and the warm welcoming people.

Dario is currently asssessing irrigation activities and their effects on water pollution in Nduruma Sub-catchment in Arumeru district of the Arusha region under the mentorship of Prof. Joy Obado of Kenyatta University and is scheduled to graduate in early 2018.

DAAD Certificates Award Ceremony

Senior staff members of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) through its In-Country/In-Region scholarship program recently visited Kenyatta University to hand over scholarship certificates to the 2016 group of Masters and Doctoral students. Kenyatta University has partnered with DAAD since 2015 through its In-Region scholarship program with the objective of promoting the development of university teaching staff and building capacity for staff in public sector through postgraduate training for select postgraduate study programmes.
